The Neighborhood Watch
A downloadable game
A Superhero TTRPG focused on fulfilling narrative arcs and making you feel as powerful as a Superhero, while also focusing on aspects of superheroics that’s most important, helping real people. This is an entirely custom system made by me, using different amounts of d6’s to accomplish any roll in the game.
All the art, including the title and logo design were made by https://www.instagram.com/foxglove_art! Check them out and give them a follow!
The core of the game is to make your characters feel truly unique, and so every playable character or main NPC has a Power that they can use. This Power can be anything you want. No, really. When you create your character you will work with your GM to create a custom, entirely original Superpower for your character. The best part? This Power allows you to break any rule in the rulebook, no matter what it is. Nothing is off limits.
You wanna constantly regenerate your health? Sounds awesome! You wanna be able to punch through solid steel? Go right for it. You wanna summon ancient eldritch beings from across the cosmos? Fucking tight, I’m into it!
Do keep in mind, however, that every single power has a weakness. When you create your power, your GM will create a weakness to add more flavor to your character and to balance things out. You might regenerate but it’ll be so painful you can’t do anything while you heal. The stronger the power, the stronger the weakness, so keep an eye out while you break the game. It might just break you back. However, don’t be discouraged from going hogwild! Make crazy shit and see what happens!
The Neighborhood Watch takes place in Broken Heights, a city in central Minnesota that is often overlooked by the rest of the country. About 3 years ago, people started to very suddenly get a wide variety of extraordinary abilities. Moving at superhuman speeds, flying through the air with the greatest of ease, these extraordinary humans, or Extrahumans as they were called, seemed unstoppable.
Peace didn't last long in many cities in America. A lot of Extrahumans used their newfound power to settle long-standing conflicts or enact violence against those they deemed as lesser. This invariably lead to fights amongst other Extrahumans that would easily trash a city to bits, and many cities were almost wiped off the map in the first few months.
The federal government stepped in, establishing the National Extrahuman Recruitment Agency, or NERA for short. They were given free reign, and cracked down hard on many of the most populated cities, turning them into vicious authoritarian nightmares run by military officers who had also become Extrahumans.
Out in rural states, far away from federal oversight, local militia groups and white supremacist factions found themselves bolstered with Extrahumans, and quickly took a foothold by terrorizing the local populace. Many of these states are still under their fascist control, and are in direct consistent tension with NERA.
Broken Heights, however, was one of the few cities that didn't get focused on by either of these factions. Left alone to fall apart from the individual Extrahuman fights, a few people stood up for the good of the citizens. These men and women joined together to become The Neighborhood Watch, a volunteer organization focused on protecting, assisting, housing, and feeding the dispossessed and minorities of Broken Heights.
The Neighborhood Watch is assisted by many members of the community, and through their hard work Broken Heights has recovered and grown even stronger together. With pressure coming in from all sides, however, will they be able to handle everything the world has yet to throw at them, and where do you fight into this? Are you with The Neighborhood Watch, or are you looking to tear them down?
The core ruleset and character sheets will be available at a Pay What You Want price point, with no expectation of donation. Feel free to play the game with your own setting and ideas free of charge!
